3 Strategies for Protecting Your Home During the Holidays

It’s that time of year again. The holidays bring family and friends together in celebration. There’s nothing more heart-warming than having your home safe and secure for visiting relatives and guests.

The time is also right to make sure your home and family are protected now that Daylight Savings Time has ended and it gets dark earlier, delivery companies are dropping parcels at the front door and you have to keep tabs on who is entering and leaving your home.

Home burglary and robbery are two of the top 10 crimes committed during the holiday season.

So I have a three strategies you can use to protect your home throughout the holiday season:

Put your indoor, outdoor and Christmas lights on a schedule. Automated lighting makes it easy to set a specific time for interior lights to turn on so you don’t enter a dark house. Law enforcement experts say that exterior lighting keeps potential thieves from targeting a home for break-ins. Police departments always advise parking in a well-lit area – and that includes your own driveway or garage. Pulling your car into a lit driveway can also give you extra peace of mind. And don’t forget you can place your outdoor Christmas lights on a schedule to turn on and off, as well.

Use security cameras to defeat parcel pirates. It happens every year. Delivery trucks drop holiday gifts ordered from online retailers on the porch. Then as soon as they leave, thieves brazenly steal the unattended packages. It also doesn’t help that delivery drivers sometimes unwittingly help thieves by dropping the packages and ringing the doorbell before scurrying off. When no one answers the door, the parcel pirates know they can make off with packages virtually unseen. The Huffington Post reports that some 23 million people said they have had packages stolen from their homes before they could open them, according to a survey from insuranceQuotes.com, a division of Bankrate Inc. A visible security camera can deter burglaries and help law enforcement when the worst does happen.

Take away the keys. It’s a good time to upgrade your door locks so that you can remotely let visiting relatives in without having to leave work early. They are also a great solution to giving your children keys that they ultimately loose. They can also help you control access to your home. You will know who is coming and going – and where. It’s always smart to lock your residence, even if you’re only going to be away for a few minutes. If you forget for some reason, then you can lock your doors using your smartphone.

You can always give me or my team a call if you want to explore these options for your home. We can help you design a safe, secure environment for you and your family.
